Back pain is one of the most common problems among adults. In fact, approximately 80 percent of all adults will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. According to the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, back pain is the second most common cause of lost work after the common cold. Back pain affects men and women equally. Although it is more prevalent between the age groups of 30-60, no age group is completely immune from it. Even children and adolescents have reported back pain.

The majority of acute back pain is caused by an injury, illness, or recent surgery and usually disappears when the underlying cause has been treated or healed. However, a significant number of indiviudals suffer from chronic back pain. In the United States alone, some 15 million working adults have this type of pain on a regular basis.

This type of pain comes in many forms, from lower back pain to neck pain to sciatica. Back pain is not a diagnosis -- it’s a symptom of an underlying condition. Common back pain causes include nerve problems, disc problems, osteoarthritis, and muscular problems. Many people find relief through stretching exercises, chiropractic teatment or alternative therapies like yoga, but chronic back pain may require medication and more intensive treatment.
